TOP TEN BOOKS ON MY WINTER TBR

10. THE WOLF ROAD – BETH LEWIS

This book sounds like it’ll be fast paced and terrifying. The story follows Ella, a young woman who finds out her father figure is a murderer. She flees into the wilderness to get away from him only to have him chase her. I don’t want to look into the book any more than that for fear of spoilers but I’m really excited for this one. It sounds like the perfect book to read by the fire.

9. SIX OF CROWS – LEIGH BARDUGO

I’m really late to the boat on this one. I’m well aware of it. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this one. Six of Crows combines the fantasy genre with the heist genre while taking place in Bardugo’s Grisha Universe (which I love). I’ve managed to stay relatively spoiler free on this one, but I feel like I won’t be able to pull that off for much longer. I’m afraid someone is going to ruin this book for me. The sooner I finish it, the better.

8. THE NAME OF THE WIND – PATRICK ROTHFUSS

I have never read a book by Patrick Rothfuss, but I trust his goodreads reviews more than anyone else’s. I figured it’s time that I pick up his Kingkiller Chronicles. I’m going to be doing a buddy read with my friend Matthew Elkin. So more on that later. The Kingkiller Chronicle is being adapted for television and film with Lin Manuel Miranda attached to the project. My hope is to read the series before the pilot airs. Giving myself a deadline will hopefully motivate me to pick this one up sooner.

7. MY LADY JANE – CYNTHIA HAND

My Lady Jane has been described as having the same sense of humour as The Princess Bride. I picked up a copy of the book last month but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet (can you see the pattern?). I recently found out that My Lady Jane is the first book in a trilogy with the second book set to come out in June 2018.

6. STEELHEART – BRANDON SANDERSON

Last spring Chelsey and I went to Ad Astra in Toronto and sat in on all of Brandon Sanderson’s panels. He spoke about his current work in progress that at the time was nicknamed Coffee Girl. The book would be the first in a new series that would serve as a companion series to his Reckoners books. After the panel Chelsey and I decided that we wanted to cover “Coffee Girl”now titled Apocalpyse Guard here on Death of the Author. I figure it would make sense to read The Reckoners first. Steelheart appears to be pretty short and won’t take too long. It will also be my first read from Brandon Sanderson.

5. A CROWN FOR COLD SILVER – ALEX MARSHALL

My relationship with this book is kind of ridiculous. Chelsey and I were at Chapters and I picked this book up because I liked the title (and it was a giant book and I love big books). I don’t know why but I opened the book up and read the first line. I bought the book based off of that first line. This all happened at the end of April 2015. Since then this book has been lent out to almost all of my friends and they all rave about it. I have yet to read this book. The final book in the trilogy comes out on December 5th 2017, so maybe I’ll just marathon the series in January.

4. EVERY HEART A DOORWAY – SEANAN MAGUIRE

The concept for this series sounds really cool. It follows children who return home after being taken to magical realms. These children tend to end up at Miss West’s Home for Wayward Children. Doorway follows Nancy after she arrives at the school and her arrival marks a change. Nancy and her school mates need to deal with the newfound mystery. Every Heart a Doorway is a short novel that will definitely help flesh out my Goodreads Reading Challenge. I’ve never read a novel by Mira Grant/Seanan Maguire that I haven’t enjoyed. The idea of her taking on fairy tales sounds amazing.

3. THE INEVITABLE VICTORIAN THING – E.K. JOHNSON

A world where the British Empire persevered, where Victorian society has survived. IT TAKES PLACE IN TORONTO! Do I need to say more? It’s always strange to read a novel that takes place in your hometown but a Victorian-afied hometown? Yes please!

2. NEVERNIGHT – JAY KRISTOFF

I loved Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman so much that it lead me to check out their other works. I put Nevernight on hold at the library and got about halfway through it before I had to return it, As I write this I am 78/100 people waiting for their chance with the book. The world of Nevernight is cool and reminds me a lot of Camorr in Lies of Locke Lamora. I expect this series to fill the void in my heart left by the lack of The Thorn of Emberlain. #stillwaiting

1. AN ENCHANTMENT OF RAVENS – MARGARET ROGERSON

This book popped up on my goodreads dashboard because I read Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series. I’m  a sucker for high fantasy stories revolving around the fae. This book sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun and perfect to read in the winter months.

So there you have it. My top ten books I plan on reading this winter. Will I actually do it? Who knows. Only time will tell. Check back in with me in May.
