It seems like our prayers have been answered!
In our recent video looking at the upcoming movie adaptations of teen books (watch it here) Read and I discussed The Giver. The movie is slated to be released August 15, 2014, but to our shock and dismay there has been no trailer nor buzz, only a cast list posted on imdb to spark our fancy.
This all changed yesterday when Entertainment weekly posted the first set pictures to come out of the film!
The article also goes to mention the long time coming of this adaptation. From the sounds of it all those working on the film are passionate to breathe life into this haunting, interesting novel.
Director Philip Noyce describes the world of The Giver as:
“The past is considered to be potentially polluting… This is a world where complications are eliminated. Jonas himself goes on a journey as he finds out what’s missing. He starts to investigate what’s causing it. And that’s the beauty. That’s what makes the book so popular, it’s an investigation in ways of living.”
The first photo shows the Giver (Jeff Bridges) and Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) in what one can only assume as one of Jonas’s many lessons:
The second photo shows Jonas carrying his temporary” baby brother after he has left the Community.
The Giver was never my favourite book as a kid. It terrified me, and forced me to open my eyes to a lot of things that made me uncomfortable. I’m interested to see how the film handles these darker concepts.
But we’ll have to wait and see. I expect this is the first in a long line of information on this upcoming film.
