Fairy Tales are really popular these days. Did ABC’s Once Upon a Time wake them up from some magical slumber?
Snow White and the Huntsmen is a beautifully shot film. A lot of effort went into creating a corrupted fantasy world. I loved everything about the Dark Forest. It had just the right level of darkness to remind me of when I originally read the Brother’s Grimm Fairy Tales.
The major flaw of this movie had to be the performances. Only Charlize Theron really seemed to be trying to sell her role as the Evil Queen. There was so much that this film could have worked with but it just fell flat on its face. I don’t know if this was the fault of the actors or the script they were given to work with. There wasn’t much dialogue, just a lot of standing around and looking at things as they wander through the beautifully rendered CGI worlds.
I suspect that this isn’t the last of the fairy tale films that we will see paraded into the theaters in the next few years. I expect there will be a live action adaptation of all their big princess properties with some kind of dark twist on them. Wouldn’t it be interesting if they did a live action little mermaid and chose to stick to the original sea foam ending? I’d pay to see that.
