The Bechdel Cast – Twilight

The Bechdel Cast is a podcast hosted by Jamie Loftus and Caitlin Durante about the portrayal of women in film. It’s inspired by the Bechdel Test created by cartoonist Alison Bechdel, which requires that a movie has two female characters (with names) who speak to each other about something other than a man. Very few films pass the test, and when they do, it’s often by the skin of their teeth. The Bechdel Cast is putting a spotlight on one of Hollywood’s biggest problems, the under- and misrepresentation of women in cinema!

Just when you thought everything has been said about Twilight, you find out that there is in fact more.

Last week on the Bechdel Cast Jamie Loftus and Caitlin Durante covered the first Twilight film. The episode was full of lots of laughs, great commentary and interesting insights.

I liked how this episode didn’t get negative towards people for liking Twilight. All three hosts admitted to being fans (or tolerating) the Twilight craze. It’s really easy to fall into the trap of insulting the Twilight fandom (I’ve done it) People forget that there is a difference between critiquing and being cruel.

The episode offers an interesting reading of Twilight. The hosts point out how Bella starts out with a lot more agency than she’s usually given credit for. As the film progresses this agency is stripped from her. It’s an interesting reading and it makes me want to reread the book and watch the movie to compare them.

I get the feeling that this much talked about Twilight reread is going to be happening sooner than I originally thought.

The big question of the episode of course is: Does Twilight pass the Bechdel Test? Well you’ll have to listen to find out.

If you’re looking for a podcast with a good mix of humour and feminist critique then look no further than the Bechdel Cast. It’s fun, it’s clever and it makes you realize just how deeply the lack of female representation in cinema goes.
